This little beauty originates from Australia and is not very common as a garden flower in the UK. A real gem for late summer and early autumn colour.
Some say she is a little ‘twee’…we don’t think so…and if she was…well she’s a flower for Gawd’s sake what do you expect!
How to propagate Didiscus
Ok I have to honest here but this year will be the first time I’ve given it a go. Research tells me to plant in small pots of flats, under glass in March. Then when the seedlings look sturdy, harden them off and put them put in well prepared beds about a foot apart.
After the frosts she can be sown outside but keep the soil moist, never allow it to dry out. Dig in some slow release fertilizer before you sow.
How to grow Didiscus on
It would seem this plant does not like a hot and dry summer so I would suggest the occasional deep water if we have one of those periods {laughs to himself out loud}
When to cut Didiscus
This fab plant should flower from June until November….cut when only a few of the flowers have opened and it should last you a week in the vase. Keep a solid deadheading ritual and blooms will come again…yippee! {Ka-ching!}
Where can I buy Didiscus seeds?
You can buy Didiscus and all sorts of other wonderful flower seeds in the Higgledy Garden Shop. :)
Please let us know how you get on in your garden and we’ll keep you up to date on what happens with our Blue Lace attempts.
