There was a smatering of rain about today, so decided to sow the first of my hardy annuals. I nipped down to my local garden center and bought myself a packet of Unwins Cornflower seeds and got stuck in. It’s a great feeling to know next years crop are on the way already.
Usually I would only plant three rows in a bed but in these ‘Super XT5’ beds (made up name…humour me) I have planted five rows…this will meet with disapproval from the floricultural community as it will make it more difficult to keep weed free and to harvest. But I need to use the little space I have more efficiently…and I don’t think it will be that difficult… The beds themselves are just over five foot wide.

Weeds won’t get a look in, one of the good things about close planting!

I’ve been really lucky with the beds in this field…hardly any weeds at all. I’m planting loads of autumn annuals this year…I’m not getting caught out again with not enough in spring…plus…I’m thinking that they will get a head start if there is another drought.
