Briza Maxima Grass

Briza maxima is a graceful ornamental grass grown for its delicate, nodding seed heads that tremble and flutter in the slightest breeze—hence the name “quaking grass.” The papery, heart-shaped heads start out fresh green and mature to a soft golden straw, adding movement and texture to borders and arrangements.

It’s a favourite for cutting and drying, working beautifully in natural-style bouquets. The seed heads last well both fresh and dried, and bring a lovely, airy quality to displays.

Easy to grow from seed, Briza prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Sow direct in spring (March to May), or start indoors earlier and plant out after the last frost. Thin or space plants to about 20cm apart.

It’s low-maintenance, charming, and a bit of a hidden gem for cutting gardens.
