Mina lobata ‘Exotic Love’ is a proper show-off of a climber, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. From midsummer onwards it throws out strings of little tubular flowers that start fiery red, fade through orange and cream, and finally settle into buttery yellow — all on the same truss, like a sunset that’s decided to hang around. It romps away happily up trellis, netting or old bits of string, giving height, movement and a bit of tropical drama without ever looking stiff or sulky.
Despite the exotic looks, it’s an obliging, easy-going half-hardy annual. Sow it somewhere warm, give it sun and something to climb, and it’ll reward you with months of colour and the sort of flowers that make visitors ask “what on earth is that?” Brilliant in the garden and surprisingly good for cutting too — especially if you like your arrangements with a bit of swagger.
