Higgledy Gem here, thrilled to share a true gem with you – the incredible Wallflower Ruby Gem! I insisted we had to stock this because if I could only grow one wallflower, this would definitely be the one! With tall stems of 45cm, an excellent vase life of 10 days, and a rich deep ruby-pink colour that lightens and brightens as it ages, as well as that classic wallflower scent, this gem truly delivers on all fronts!
Height: 45cm
Seeds in a packet: 500ish
Technically a short lived perennial, this wallflower grows best as a biennial. Sow in June or July (see my Top tip below for different effects based on when you sow)
Top Tip:
For shorter, stronger wallflowers perfect for underplanting with tulips, sow between late May and late June. Keep pinching out the tips when they try to flower that same year. This results in earlier blooming, shorter, and sturdier plants that look stunning with tulips.
For taller, later-blooming wallflowers ideal for arrangements, sow at the end of July and don’t pinch them out. These will grow taller and flower slightly later. When cutting, make sure to leave two buds to encourage side shoots later on.
