Higgledy Garden Christmas Bundle-a perfect gift for gardeners
Its hard to believe that we are starting to think about Christmas already, where has this year gone, it doesn’t seem five minutes since I was packing away the Christmas decorations in January and getting excited for the flowering year ahead. I don’t have loads of Christmas presents to buy these days, but I’m always looking for new ideas. Its always fun looking at the Sunday supplements and magazines with the Christmas gift ideas and there is often a category for ‘Gifts for Gardeners’ which range from the sublime to the ridiculous. From useful garden tools, the Hori-Hori knife is one of the best tools that any gardener can receive, and snips or secateurs are always most welcome. To gardening gloves, though I’m quite fussy about my gloves and really only like the Showa ones that are fitted enough so that you can do even the most fiddly of jobs. Posh wellies always feature as do plant labels, garden twine in a nifty holder, dibbers for seed or bulb planting and watering cans. I don’t think there is a Christmas gone by in the last 10 years or so when I haven’t received some form of soap or handcream for gardeners and there is always the novelty mug with ‘Head Gardener’ on or ‘I’d rather be in the garden’ on it, these always raise a smile. Gardening books are always top of my Christmas list and I save up a list through the year of books that come out and ask for those from Santa.
But how about a gift that holds the promise of a whole garden in its envelope, it will be loved by beginner and experienced gardeners alike. This beautifully curated Christmas collection contains 17 packets of easy, reliable, garden-worthy flowers chosen to give you months of colour and buckets of cut flowers. Its the Higgledy Garden Christmas bundle. Its great for beginners, Ben has chosed the most trustworthy and easy of seeds, that are easy to sow and reliable in germination. All the instructions for sowing are in the Higgledy Seed sowing guide. Plus there is lots of information from Ben and myself on the Higgledy blog on how to start your own cut flower patch, including this post from last year. It might inspire you to have a go at seed sowing for the first time and many gardeners will tell you that one of the biggest joys in gardening is that moment when you go to your seed tray, pot or border and spot the first shoots, the first signs of germination. It still makes me burst with happiness every year. Or may be a gift for an experienced gardener who would like to have a go at growing a cutting garden and arranging their own flowers. The range of flowers allows you to have a truly seasonal cutting patch with flowers and blooms throughout the year. They have been selected for long-flowering and good vase-life.
It includes 16 varieties plus one surprise freebie.
There are a couple of varieties of Sweet Peas, ‘Alan Williams‘, a lovely blue colour and ‘Swan Lake‘ a clean white, both with terrific scent as you would expect from a Sweet Pea.
There is an easy to sow perennial Chrysanthemum ‘Crazy Daisy’ which once established will come back and flower for you every year. There are some biennials Sweet William ‘Auricula-eyed’ and Wallflower ‘Ivory White’ which you need to sow in May/June for flowering the following Spring.

Some hardy annuals that if sown in Spring will flower in early summer, Echium ‘Blue Bedder’ a bright blue flower much loved by bees on your plot, Cornflower ‘Classic Magic’, Cornflowers are one of the best flowers for your cutting patch, Cerinthe bright glaucous green with unusual drooping blue flowers, great for foliage in your arrangement, Calendula ‘Indian Prince’, a vivid orange to give some vibrancy to your posies, Larkspur ‘Hyacinth Mix’ pastel spikes a different flower form for your arrangements and Nigella ‘Alba’ with its beautiful flowers and seed pods.
