Echinops, often called globe thistle, is one of those quietly striking perennials that earns its place without any fuss. Its perfectly round, steely-blue flower heads sit atop tall stems and bring a strong, architectural note to borders and cutting patches alike. Bees absolutely love it, and it mixes beautifully with softer, more airy flowers.
Sow seeds in spring (March to May) or autumn (August to October). Germination can be a little slow and erratic, so a bit of patience is useful. Plants may flower lightly in their first year from an early sowing, but really come into their own from the second year onwards.
Grow in full sun in well-drained soil—Echinops prefers things on the lean and dry side rather than rich and damp. Space plants around 45–60cm apart. Once established, it’s very drought tolerant and needs little attention.
A reliable perennial that adds height and structure without becoming unruly. Excellent for cutting, fresh or dried, and a solid, long-term addition to any garden that leans towards the natural and low-maintenance.
