If you’ve found yourself staring at a patch of bare soil in early May with a vague sense that you meant to sow something weeks ago… this is your gentle rescue plan.
It’s made up mainly of four varieties of Cornflowers, with Calendula and zingy green Dill for some ‘colour deflection’.
Now, a small confession: this is a Beta mix. I haven’t trialled it properly myself yet—but it’s made up of some of our most reliable, easy-going favourites. So I’m sending it out into the world at half price to a few willing souls to see how it gets on. Consider yourself part of the experiment. Please report back with pics.
This 60g mix will cover up to 20 square metres of weed-free soil and is made up of equal parts:
Calendula ‘Indian Prince’ – glowing burnt orange petals with a dark, almost smoky centre. Tough as old boots and flowers for months.
Dill ‘Mammoth’ – soft, feathery foliage with airy yellow umbels that hover like little fireworks. Adds height and movement (and the bees absolutely love it).
Cornflower ‘Black Ball’ – deep, velvety burgundy blooms that bring a bit of drama.
Cornflower ‘Classic Romantic’ – a softer, pastel mix that takes the edge off the stronger colours.
Cornflower ‘Classic Magic’ – a lively blend of pinks, blues, and purples that keeps things feeling spontaneous and joyful.
Together, they create a loose, natural tapestry of colour—nothing stiff or overly designed, just that lovely “it all sort of happened” look.
Why it’s perfect for late sowing:
These are all fast-growing, warm-soil lovers. Sow them in the first fortnight of May and they’ll romp away, catching up quickly and flowering generously through summer. No need for cosseting or complicated timing—just give them a sunny spot and reasonably well-drained soil.
How to grow:
Rake your soil to a fine tilth, scatter the seeds evenly, lightly rake in, and water. That’s about it. Thin if you feel inclined, but honestly—they’ll muddle through quite happily on their own.
In short:
A forgiving, flower-filled second chance… and a small, cheerful experiment.
